They built Japan’s first tape recorder together and called their new company “Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company”, shortened to “TET”. The name Sony was created from the first two letters of their original brand Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo which are now written in Japanese characters as. “ソニー” (Sony). The English word “son” comes from the Middle English sonne, which was derived from Old English sunna or sūnna, meaning “sun’s young one”. or “daughter born in the sun”. This company Corporation is headquartered in Kōnan Minato, Tokyo. 

It has been in the business of electronics since 1946 when it released its first product, a rice cooker called “Rice-o-Matic”. This was followed by their first transistor radio in 1955 called “TR-55” which sold for $150 at its time of release.

Throughout its history, they have introduced various innovative products. In 1958, they released their first tape recorder called “Magnetic Tape Portastudio”. In 1965, their first color TV, “TR-55S”, hit the market. Additionally, in 1970, they unveiled their first VCR, “TRV-111”.

Expanding its horizons in 1980, it entered the video game market by launching its inaugural console, the “Play Station 1”. Alongside this achievement, the company forged collaborations with industry giants like Panasonic and Samsung to develop groundbreaking products, including Blu-Ray players and 3D TVs.
